Standard IVa - Professional Development / Learning Communities

As the Instructional Facilitator at Apex Friendship Middle School, I designed a number of processes and procedures around professional learning communities. Our PLTs were required to complete a weekly minutes document that administrators reviewed. I also designed CFA Analysis documents and conducted Quarterly Reviews with each PLT. In transitioning to Alston Ridge, I provided copies of these resources to our Instructional Facilitator as resources to consider in developing our systems and structures.

During the first quarter and with the support of our Ed Elements consultants, we realized that we did not have many expectations for our PLTs. In discussing this with the administrative team and with the Instructional Facilitator, it was determined that a "refresh" was needed so we could more explicitly share our expectations of teachers. During the second semester, we have noticed that teachers are being more intentional amongst their teams.

I served on the Compact Math committee at the beginning of the school year with the purpose of creating a program that would allow students and families to understand the hybrid learning model. This meeting helped us create next steps so we could be well-planned and get ahead of parent questions as we rolled out our program.

Standard IVb - Recruiting, Hiring, Placing, and Mentoring of Staff

As a brand new school, we had the lofty task of hiring 80+ staff members. One method that we used was to invite 30 candidates at a time to participate in a three-hour interview day. We brought teachers who had already been hired to be group leaders who asked a specific set of questions. At the end of our three hours, we selected candidates who were definite hires and those who could be invited back for a one-on-one interview.

We had an experience with one substitute teacher that led to her being added to the "do not use" list for our school. A teacher reported to me that her substitute e-mailed her making a comment about our demographics. Through my investigation, I confirmed with the teacher that her mindset did not align with our school's mission or vision. I completed all of the appropriate steps including submitting a letter to her file at HR. Due to the sensitive nature of this artifact, it is restricted.

I have been working closely with a teacher who struggled to acclimate to our school and our expectations. Assistant Principal Brown and I have worked closely with this teacher to provide supports and coaching. This memo was placed in the teacher's internal file to summarize the steps we took during the first observation cycle. Due to the sensitive nature of this artifact, it is restricted.

Standard IVc - Teacher and Staff Evaluations

Early in the school year, I attended the NCEES Evaluator training for administrators. This provided me with my first inside look at the intricacies with setting up a school-based evaluation system. After attending this training with Assistant Principal Resua, I participated in the training of staff members and mentors. We also met as an administrative team to level set on the observation process.

In order to be present in classrooms and to gather glows and grows for staff, I conducted weekly walk-throughs to a minimum of two classrooms a week. I typically visited classes daily and I found that these visits helped me as an administrator have more success when it came to completing evaluations as I had more evidence to inform decisions. Due to the sensitive nature of this artifact, it is restricted.

I also conducted monthly evaluations alongside the administrators at my school. In my learning process, I began the year by listening and watching the administrators conduct all aspects of the observation. Eventually, the process was scaffolded for me so I could gain experience using the evaluation tool and providing feedback during post conferences. The support of my administrative team allowed me to grow immensely in this area. Due to the sensitive nature of this artifact, it is restricted.
