I attend the monthly budget meetings with Principal Williams and our bookkeeper. During these meetings we discuss a number of budgetary items and review necessary paperwork. I appreciate that both of these folks spend time explaining things to me and discussing where certain money originates. I also participated in a meeting regarding the ordering of new materials for next year as we will still have new school money for 2020-2021.

Now that we are in our Budget course, I feel more confident in my knowledge of budgetary laws and various budget codes. The notes from this particular day felt necessary to learn and we ultimately were told that it is imperative to have a strong Bookkeeper working for you. We also learned the importance of aligning budgetary decisions to the School Improvement Plan.

Standard Vb - Conflict Management and Resolution

As an administrative team at Alston Ridge Middle School, we participated in a training called "The Collaborative Operating System." This training put our team through a protocol that helped us develop commitments to one another regarding feedback, communication, conflict management, and more. The purpose behind this system is to then take these agreements and utilize them with other committees or teams that we engage in within the building to help them create their own alignment and ownership.

As our year progressed, the administrative team emphasized the importance of "grace." As we are a brand new school, we want to have grace for our teachers and we want teachers to have grace for their colleagues and their students. We put together a list of "Errors in Cognitive Thinking" to help reframe some thinking for specific people within the building. As we conduct individual conversations with teachers, this has been used as an effective resource.

One of our course assignments required conducting a crucial conversation with a staff member. I wrote about a crucial conversation I had with my previous principal. I find myself utilizing the components of crucial conversations frequently, especially with teachers. I appreciate having this improved skill set.

Standard Vc - Systematic Communication

I am one of the primary contacts over facilities at Alston Ridge Middle School. As the contracting company was very delayed in finishing our building, we had a number of room needs upon entering the school. I created a streamlined process to gather needs of staff members, which then allowed me to place work orders through the proper channels. Over the first couple months of the school year, I sent bi-weekly e-mails sharing updates with staff members.

I created a system to track incoming and outgoing buses on campus. We learned that it is imperative to have this information, especially when parents questioned bus times. I actually had a situation occur where a parent complained about how late the bus arrived on campus daily and how late it left campus. I utilized my data to share with her that the bus had only been late one time in the morning, although we confirmed that an issue was occurring in the afternoon.

I communicated effectively with all staff members when Hurricane Dorian hit in the fall. We had our first ever school cancelation, which meant we had to plan for Saturday School. The communication that we sent to staff members occurred efficiently during the two days, especially so we could share pertinent information that staff needed to know regarding making up time.

Standard Vd - School Expectation for Student and Staff
Vertical Divider
|
In developing our shared vision, the administrative team created a list of "commitments" that we wanted each staff member to represent. We expect our teachers to do things differently, which truly makes our school culture unique. Feedback from stakeholders shows that the teachers who are committed to these expectations have helped develop our school identity into a strong one.

We did not begin the year with a set discipline structure as we wanted staff to get to know their students. Feedback that we received from staff members showed that they wanted a more streamlined structure across the building. This allowed us to invite staff members to a series of Discipline Summits, which will help create a schoolwide system moving forward. We had productive conversations around expectations within our school and structures to use with student discipline.

Similar to work I did at Apex Friendship, I brought the idea of social contracts with me to Alston Ridge. We made some adjustments to what I had used in the past although the tenets remained the same. We wanted each team to create commitments with and to one another and the students took this very seriously. Students and teachers were able to provide their perspectives to one another and have buy-in for shared expectations.
